Tiebreaker Monday
October 1, 2007
Enjoy today’s game, because these tiebreakers don’t happen very often.
What a crazy baseball weekend. The Rockies, whose bandwagon I jumped on a few weeks ago, have forced a one-game playoff for the NL Wild Card. The Padres’ magic number was 1 after Friday, but lost two games and saw the Rockies win on Saturday and Sunday. Mark Townsend at Bugs & Cranks sums it up pretty well:
Can you believe it? Can anyone really believe this is happening? The Rockies winning 13 of their last 14. The Milwaukee Brewers coming off the deck to take down San Diego two straight days. This is completely ridiculous, and I love it!
It’s Jake Peavy vs. Josh Fogg tonight. It looks like a mismatch on paper, but you never know what can happen. Fogg hasn’t been bad this year, but he hasn’t been good this year (ERA of 4.79 at Coors Field leads to a 99 ERA+)
The Padres could’ve started Peavy on Sunday, but opted not to, leading to some second guessing. I don’t blame them for starting Tomko on Sunday — I probably would’ve done the same thing. The St. Louis Cardinals were in a similar situation last year with Chris Carpenter, and they ended up not having to play an extra game.
It’s amazing how many people like me have jumped on the Rockies’ bandwagon. Deadspin joined on Friday, and look at the comments on Purple Row — there’s a lot of fans from other teams coming on to wish their support. The Rockies really are a fascinating story, winning 13 of their last 14 games to get here, and the average baseball fan would have a hard time naming you too many Colorado Rockies.
Tonight’s game is at 4:30 p.m. (Pacific Time), is televised on TBS and can be heard on ESPN Radio. Let’s hope for a close, exciting game.
