rayslogo.jpgSo the Tampa Bay Devil Rays have dropped the “Devil” from their team name and are now just the Tampa Bay Rays.

I never understood why they needed to drop the “devil” — it’s not like they were Satan-worshippers, it’s the name of an animal.

Nevertheless, they changed it, making their team name less interesting.

I actually kind of like their new logo though, even if it’s unoriginal. They’re old logo and jerseys may have had a lot of different colors, but they were unique.

I don’t think dropping the “Devil” was as much secular as it was intended to improve the team’s image. New name, new logo, new uniforms, maybe a new team on the field? I think it’s a good idea for them.

Yeah, you’re probably right, it was probably more about image, but “Devil” was probably a part of it (I’d heard complaints over the years).

I guess thinking about it further, this could be a good thing for them — the Angels changed logos before the 2002 season, and we know what happened then.

Just what MLB needs. Yet another baseball team that claims blue as its team color. The Devil Rays, oops I mean, Rays, are already 4 years behind the dark blue and light blue color combo trend in sports (see NFL Titans; NBA Mavs, Grizzlies, Jazz, Nuggets; MLB Padres, etc).

The color scheme is already dated. Every team looks the same.

Why can’t sports teams get more creative?
