Sports this weekend

November 10, 2007

This is the first weekend of college basketball but there aren’t too many big games, or even games on TV. That’s kind of disappointing. What isn’t disappointing is UCLA’s performance on Friday night, as they dominated their opener against Portland State 69-48.

There aren’t as many football games I’m looking forward to as last week, but there are some:

  • Air Force/Notre Dame — can Notre Dame lose to two military schools in a row? (How did UCLA lose to them again?)
  • Illinois/Ohio State — in a season full of upsets, #1 hasn’t fallen in a long time. It needs to, to open up the championship to two teams that look more talented than Ohio State (LSU and Oregon) or a better underdog story in Kansas.
  • Kansas/Oklahoma State — How long can Kansas keep this up? Here’s hoping they make it through one more week.
  • Fresno State/Hawaii — Our first chance to see Hawaii play against a half-decent team. Fresno State has built a reputation of knocking off the big schools or at least giving them a scare — does that apply to unbeaten Hawaii?
  • Arizona State/UCLA — as usual, I list them only because I’m a UCLA fan. As bad as the Bruins have looked the last two weeks, I wouldn’t be surprised at all if they won. That’s what UCLA does in the Dorrell era — build your hopes up and then knock them down in the most demoralizing way possible. My prediction: UCLA beats Arizona State and Oregon, meaning they’d go into the season finale against USC with a win sending them to the Rose Bowl — but USC wins 100-6.
