The Cardinals go after yet another former Angel
January 14, 2008
UPDATE: It’s official now.
Reportedly, the Cardinals and Blue Jays are close to a deal that would swap Scott Rolen for Troy Glaus. If this deal goes through, it would mean that since the Angels won the 2002 World Series, the Cardinals would have employed the entire starting infield from that team that won it all.
1B: Scott Speizio, joined Cardinals in 2006, still on roster
2B: Adam Kennedy, re-joined Cardinals in 2007, still on roster
SS: David Eckstein, on Cardinals from 2005-07, now with Toronto
3B: Troy Glaus, deal to Cardinals pending, played for Jays since ‘06
But that’s not all, look at the other St. Louis Cardinals since 2002 who have been former Angels:
Jim Edmonds: With Angels from 1993-99, with Cardinals 2000-07
Orlando Palmeiro: With Angels 1997-2002, with Cardinals 2003
Russ Springer: With Angels 1993-1995, with Cardinals 2003, 2007
Jeff Weaver: With Angels early 2006, finished season with Cardinals
Troy Percival: With Angels 1995-2004, with Cardinals 2007
That’s a lot of former Angels. And also, I’d like to consider Yadier Molina an honorary Angel, since two of his brothers played for the team.
Just wait until St. Louis signs an aging Garret Anderson, Bartolo Colon, Ramon Ortiz, or bring Tim Salmon out of retirement in the next couple of years. Then the takeover will be complete.
