52 days ’til Opening Day

February 8, 2008

davidortiz.jpgThere are 52 days left until that best day of the year, MLB Opening Day.

52 is also the number of doubles David Ortiz hit last season, the second-most in the league to Magglio Ordonez’s 54.

Why I really brought this up is to give you all a fantasy baseball tip. (Interested in joining a blogger fantasy baseball league? Check the post below.)

I can see how some people would drop David Ortiz’s fantasy value a little because his power fantasy numbers dropped a bit last year.

2006: 54 HR, 137 RBI, 115 R, .287 AVG
2007: 35 HR, 117 RBI, 116 R, .332 AVG

But don’t do it people. Hidden behind the home run and RBI drops are his double numbers:

2006: 29 doubles (lowest in five years)
2007: 52 doubles (highest in career)

I think it’s safe to assume that some of those 54 home runs turned into doubles, which in turn gave him fewer RBI (you don’t drive in yourself on a double).

Big Papi should still be drafted very early in all of your drafts. He’s still very consistently one of the best power hitters in the majors.
