kapono.jpgCongrats to Jason Kapono for winning the NBA Three-point Shootout for the second consecutive year.

His 25 points in the final round is the most ever in the finals and Kapono is the first person to win the contest two years in a row since Peja Stojakavic did in 2002-2003.

44 days ’til Opening Day

February 16, 2008

There are 44 days left until that best day of the year, MLB Opening Day.

Randy Johnson is 44 years old and is surprisingly, only going to be the second-oldest player in the majors this year to Jamie Moyer’s 45. (This is assuming currently unemployed Julio Franco, David Wells and Roger Clemens don’t sign contracts — all three look unlikely.)

Johnson was on the DL most of last season but according to two different reports, is apparently healthy and has thrown three bullpen sessions already for Arizona.

He will likely never regain the dominance he had for most of his career, because that’s very hard to do. From 1995-2004, the Big Unit had seven seasons of under 3.00 ERAs with over 210 innings.

I wouldn’t bet against Johnson having a good season though. He was pitching effectively before the injury last season (3.81 ERA in 56.7 innings with 72 strikeouts). Johnson needs 16 more wins to get to that magic 300 mark, and while that’s not easy, he definitely has a good chance.

Of course, the Big Unit will always be remembered for killing that bird.
