A good, comeback win for UCLA
February 24, 2008
For a good chunk of the second half, I thought UCLA was going to lose. The Bruins were losing for most of the game, their shots weren’t falling, the usual defensive dominance wasn’t there — this game looked eerily familiar to the Washington and USC losses.
But the Bruins didn’t let that happen this time, winning 75-65 over Oregon.
They re-grouped and went on a run to take the lead and never let it go again, sparked by Darren Collison, Kevin Love and Russell Westbrook.
In other college basketball news, #5 Kansas was upset by Oklahoma State. It’s upsets like those that make me not worry to much about UCLA’s seeding come tournament time. If the Bruins keep winning, everything else will work itself out. (I wasn’t the first to have that realization).

36 days ’til Opening Day: Jered Weaver
February 24, 2008
There are 36 days left until that best day of the year, MLB’s Opening Day.
36 is also the number Jered Weaver wears on his jersey. Weaver did not have a great season last year, but was definitely more than passable as the Angels’ No. 3 starter. He did regress a bit from his stellar rookie season in 2006.
2006: 11-2, 2.96 ERA, 123 IP, 105 K, 33 BB, 1.03 WHIP
2007: 13-7, 3.91 ERA, 161 IP, 115 K, 45 BB, 1.39 WHIP
I’m not too concerned though, because Weaver is only 25 and generally doesn’t reach high pitch counts because Scioscia pulls him early. So hopefully Weaver continues to develop and regain some of that 2006 form.
And he better not follow the career path of his older brother Jeff Weaver, who is still unsigned for this season. Though it would make Jered rich, it would also make sure he goes from team to team and put up medicore to bad seasons.
