Opening Day thoughts

April 1, 2008

This was one of the most entertaining things to happen on Opening Day: (Hat-tip to Awful Announcing for finding the video)

I know it’s just one game (that the Brewers won in extras), and Eric Gagne will very likely rebound from this and have a great season. But combine that blown save with the way Gagne ended last season, and the questionable fat contract given to him by the Brewers, and that had to raise a few eyebrows.

I also thoroughly enjoyed Kansas City’s 11-inning win over Detroit in which a runner on each team was thrown out at home. It’s fun to see the Royals start the season on a positive note, let them have hope for one day in what will probably be a tough, long season.

As for the Angels, it’s not good to see them lose, especially when they can’t score off of Livan Hernandez and Garret Anderson seems lost in left field. But I’m not getting worked up about one loss yet, especially when I’m just glad to see them play again.

Baseball season — it’s here.

That game was twelve kinds of suck up to the bottom of the 9th, and the bullpen folding like cheap lawn chairs made sure it sucked after, but god damn. That was some beautiful debut for Fukudome, who also doubled in his very first at bat.

If I come across the WGN video for this, I’ll link you up. The homers calling this was priceless!

It was a great opening day for the Padres who shut out the Astros. Peavy also helped out tremendously at the plate with 2 RBIs. The Pads will do terrifically this year if we can figure out how to let Peavy pitch every single game. Otherwise I am not so sure.

Becky — I’d love the WGN feed if you ever find it.

Hawaii — I missed most of the Pads game, but do think they’ll be competitive this year. They have some talent, and it is the National League — it doesn’t take much to win there.
